19일 부산모터쇼 조직위에 따르면 현재까지 참가를 확정한 완성차업체는 총 6곳에 불과하다. 국산차회사는 현대자동차(제네시스 포함)와 기아자동차, 르노삼성자동차, 한국지엠이며 수입차회사는 BMW코리아(미니 포함)와 캐딜락코리아가 전부다.
조직위는 "주요 수입사를 중심으로 참가를 위해 지속적으로 협의중"이라면서도 "글로벌 본사의 전략과 신차 출시시기가 맞지 않아 업체들이 참가를 망설이고 있다"고 밝혔다.
업계는 국내 자동차산업이 처한 어려운 상황들이 모터쇼 불참으로 이어졌을 것으로 보고 있다. 먼저 신종 코로나19의 확산과 국민 불안이 장기화하면서 대규모 행사에 대한 부담감이 작용했을 것이란 관측이다. 일본차의 경우 불매운동에 따른 소비자들의 부정적 인식과 경영정상화를 위해 올해 불참을 선언했고, 일부 브랜드는 비슷한 시기에 열리는 포뮬러E 경기에 집중하는 분위기다.

완성차업체들이 참가를 꺼리면서 부산모터쇼의 흥행은 올해도 쉽지 않을 전망이다. 부산모터쇼는 2001년 첫 개최 후 꾸준히 방문자가 늘어 2012년에는 110만 명으로 정점을 찍었다. 그러나 큰 변화없는 전시형태와 미흡한 운영 등에 실망하면서 방문자 수는 2016년 72만 명, 2018년 62만 명으로 줄었다. 올해는 상황이 더 심각해져 방문자 수가 급감할 수 있다는 우려가 나오는 상황이다. 그러자 부산모터쇼 조직위는 체질개선을 통해 모터쇼 형태를 바꾼다는 계획이다.
조직위 관계자는 "세계 유수의 모터쇼를 비롯해 서울모터쇼와 비교해서도 경쟁력이 높지 않는 부산모터쇼의 현실을 잘 알고 있다"며 "자생력을 갖추기 위해 새로운 방향성을 모색하고 있고, 완성차 브랜드에만 집중하지 않겠다"고 강조했다.
실제 올해 부산모터쇼는 '넥스트 모빌리티'라는 슬로건에 맞춰 폭넓은 이동수단을 전시 및 공개할 예정이다. 캠핑카와 슈퍼카 전시공간을 별도로 마련하고 부품 및 액세서리를 활용한 튜닝카 전시공간을 제공해 오토살롱 성격도 더할 계획이다. 또 초소형 전기차업체들의 참가를 독려하고 별도 전시 및 시승장소를 갖춰 E-모빌리티쇼의 범위를 넓히기로 했다.
조직위는 "우리만의 색깔을 찾는 과도기적 단계"라며 "지속가능한 모터쇼를 만들기 위해 여러 방향에 걸쳐 고민하고 있다"고 설명했다. 조직위는 이와 함께 "각종 대안을 마련해 사람들이 브랜드 신차 외에 모빌리티 전반에 걸쳐 경험할 수 있는 모터쇼로 만들 것"이라고 설명했다.
한편, 부산모터쇼는 5월28일 프레스데이를 시작으로 6월7일까지 부산 벡스코에서 열린다.
